05 October 2006:

Farewell message from Peter Lincoln...

A message in a bottle from Peter Lincoln washed ashore today... Here it is:

Well, it’s been a wonderful eleven or so years but now – five Nickelodeons later - it seems that the time has finally come for me to move on.
I have made lifelong friendships with Phil, Grant and Henry. Along the way we have shared some fabulous times with a good deal of uproarious fun, and sometimes complete insanity. Our trip to Greenland, the "birth" of "The Full Monty", the towns, the girls, the harbours……
When Henry first suggested the idea of his son Ollie as a replacement I was absolutely delighted. He’s a great guy and he’s going to do a great job!
So I guess it only remains for me to thank all of the friends and fans of SAILOR for their continued support throughout my time with the band.
I bid a fond farewell to SAILOR and wish them every success for the future.
Love to all
Peter

19 September 2006:

New singer: Oliver Marsh

Important Newsflash from SAILOR:
SAILOR - Henry Marsh, Grant Serpell and Phil Pickett are delighted and proud to announce that Henry's son, Oliver Marsh has joined the band replacing Peter Lincoln on lead vocals and guitar. Oliver Marsh

Oliver, 28, has already achieved fantastic success as a star vocalist in such productions as 'The Blues Brothers' which toured all over Germany, and 'The Roy Orbison Story' in which he played both John Lennon and Bruce Springsteen to rave reviews and critical acclaim. Prior to this he impressed many in Phil and Henry's ''Casper The Musical'' which opened in London's West End in 1999. In many ways he was the obvious choice and his impressive vocal range as well as a genuine enthusiasm to become part of the band instantly convinced everyone that Ollie was their man.
''Being part of the SAILOR 'family' was of course an advantage'' says Phil; ''but his youthful energy and amazingly powerful voice knocked spots off all other contenders and he is already becoming a huge asset to the band. I believe Ollie will give SAILOR a whole new lease of life as well as the 'shot in the arm' it needs at this point.''
Grant agrees: ''Henry of course did a fantastic job going over everything with Ollie and although content to leave the final decision to me and Phil, was very confident in his abilities. But you can tell Ollie just loves the songs and the strength and range of his voice will give SAILOR opportunities to expand and improve the live show enormously. I'm thrilled he actually wants to do it!''
Oliver is very excited about his future in SAILOR and makes his debut performance with the band in Munich on 14 October 2006.

Peter Lincoln on stage with The Sweet 03.09.2006 Duisburg, DSweet Pete...

No SAILOR news, but at least we've got a related special bit for you:
Yesterday our reporters Katrin (well, that's me) and Christel went to see Peter Lincoln with The Sweet in Duisburg, Germany. As you probably all know by now (if not see below) Peter is leaving SAILOR to join Andy Scott's The Sweet after more than ten years as the SAILOR captain.
Last night he did an impressive job on stage, so we have no doubt that he's got a glittering sweet life ahead of him.
To give you an impression...

August 2006:

Man Overboard again... Peter Lincoln leaves !!

Announcement from SAILOR - 04 August 2006:

SAILOR regret to announce that after almost 11 years as lead vocalist and guitarist, Peter Lincoln is leaving to join Andy Scott's Sweet. Although initially sad and surprised he decided to jump ship, Henry, Grant and Phil wish him the very best for his future with Sweet. Peter's last show with SAILOR will be at Parchim in Germany on 09 September 2006.
Although extremely sorry to lose him, there are no recriminations whatsoever and everyone involved will enjoy many happy memories and extremely good times making music together over the last decade for many years to come. SAILOR also wish to take this opportunity to thank Peter for his consumate professionalism, wonderful voice, warmth and humour - and in fact for being a 'bloody decent all-round chap' flying the flag 'up at the pointy end' for the last 11 years - Good luck shipmate!
Of course it seemed obvious that SAILOR's first port of call for Peter's replacement would be original member and writer of many of SAILOR's songs, Georg Kajanus. The band felt that after an 11-year absence Georg might well have cherished the opportunity to get back on board the unique musical entity he helped create all those years ago and to that effect SAILOR contacted Georg recently.
After much deliberation however, unfortunately Georg felt that circumstances were not right for him at this time, and so in the true spirit of "Le Matelot" - Sailor now intend to search for new blood and a fresh start.
SAILOR has become a remarkable institution over the years, a band of resourceful, talented (some would say eccentric!) and above all, tenacious individuals who - especially after a wonderfully memorable concert in Austria last weekend - have decided that the long voyage of SAILOR will definitely continue. With this in mind steps have already been taken that in spite of the above difficulties still give rise to a degree of excitement and anticipation at SAILOR HQ.
Out of challenges often come great new possibilities and SAILOR sincerely hope and trust that all of their true fans will keep the faith, not lose heart, and above all give them the chance to prove yet again that they can keep the SAILOR flag flying high for a few more years at least!
Therefore in September SAILOR will have great pleasure in announcing who their new lead singer will be.
Watch this space!
Good night and good luck,
Phil, Henry & Grant - 04 August 2006

From the webmaster to Peter......
When there seemed to be no hope aboard this ship lost in the blue desert and no harbour lights were in sight you decided to join the crew and become our new captain in 1996. Since that day you brought us incredibly great music and a lot of fun, entertainment and new enthusiasm. Between all the journeys and adventures, all highs and lows - seasickness, storms and power cuts (!) - you were always there for us - on duty or off-duty - before, after and even during the concerts.
From your very first moment on stage you impressed me with your way of performing - and ever since. It was an honour to have been able to see you at 58 times during the last ten years (plus one or two more to come?!). I wish it had been even more.
I could say a lot more, but to sum it up there's only one thing: Thanks for always being so absolutely bloody MARVELLOUS!!!
We'll miss you captain Peter! Keep on rockin...
All the best and LOVE
~Katrin X

Update 11 July 2006:

World premiere of "Sailor - The Musical Journey"

"Sailor The Musical Journey" - written by Bill Blenman with songs by Georg Kajanus - was performed at the Carnegie Hall Dunfermline (near Edinburgh), UK from 03 July until 08 July 2006.
This musical has taken over three years to write. Georg Kajanus has given permission for Bill to use two unrecorded tracks for the musical that Georg originally wrote for his very own SAILOR musical in the 80s. The musical contains 21 songs mainly from the first four albums, "Sailor", "Trouble", "The Third Step", and "Checkpoint".
We have created a special page about this special even where you can see:

Special thanks from us go to: Bill Blenman, Georg Kajanus and Barbie Wilde, Steve Morris (and Mary) and the whole cast and crew of "Sailor - The Musical Journey" as well as all the fans who were there and made it a night to remember!!

Have a look at our special page about Sailor - The Musical Journey!!

The one-off, amateur production for charity of 'Sailor The Musical Journey' by Bill Blenman should not be confused with the totally separate and different Musical called 'Sailor', written by Roberto Trippini and Georg Kajanus with Barbie Wilde, from an original story by Georg Kajanus, lyrics and music by Georg Kajanus.  Details about this project can be found on a separate page. Click here!
The rights for the lyrics and music by Georg Kajanus that featured in 'Sailor The Musical Journey' by Bill Blenman are not available for future performance of 'Sailor The Musical Journey'.

Book: Kajanus

The book "Kajanus" - the definitive biography of composer, songwriter and musician Georg Kajanus - has been printed and will be sent out to all buyers shortly.

Here's a newsletter from author James McCarraher:
"Ladies and Gentlemen
I am absolutely thrilled to be able to share with you that 'Kajanus' has now been printed. All 200 copies were delivered to me by the printer this morning. I can further share with you that the books look absolutely beautiful and the standard of printing is immaculate.
I am meeting Georg on Thursday to sign and number the copies. Thereafter, I shall start fulfilling all customer orders.
I would ask that you be a little patient with me when I send them out throughout July. I have a lot of orders and it will be just me packing the envelopes and deluging my local post master.
BUT I promise that ALL orders will be fulfilled.
To all of you that have ordered copies (or are thinking about it) I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support and kindness throughout this lovely project. You live all over the world - Australia - UK - Ireland - USA - Norway - Germany - Austria (and anywhere else I may have forgotten!) - THANK YOU!
Best wishes to you all
James"

All pre-ordered copies of the book will be accompanied by a free CD single release of Georg Kajanus' previously unreleased "Norwegian Trilogy". (Further information can be found below!)

18 May 2006:

comeback anniversary

SAILOR in Bad Segeberg on 18 May 1991Today - 18 May 2006 - is the 15th anniversary of SAILOR's big comeback performance in Bad Segeberg (Germany) after their reunion.
Here's what the official SAILOR biography from the old fan club said about this concert:
"It is a hot summer evening and a fifteen thousand strong audience seated in an outdoor environment, similar to a Roman amphitheatre, is waiting in anticipation for a very special opening act. The rapturous applause for SAILOR is way beyond Grant, Georg, Henry and Phil's expectations as they emerge from a giant sized juke box, evoking a feeling that they have been beamed back to Earth after their twelve-year absence. Wearing battered-looking white suits but looking remarkably unbattered and youthful, the band bounds with enthusiasm to their waiting instruments, the opening bars of "A Glass Of Champagne" literally bringing the audience to its feet. The momentous occasion is further enhanced by the other acts due to play that evening forsaking their last-minute rehearsals to witness and applaud SAILOR's return."

KAJANUS - The book coverBook: Kajanus - The Biography
& CD release

Release date: June 2006

The release date of "Kajanus" - the definitive biography of composer, songwriter and musician Georg Kajanus - is drawing nearer. The release is planned for June 2006.
The book has over 100 photographs, 67.000 words and runs to over 300 pages!
In view of the printing costs associated with producing a hard back book of this quality, this very special run is limited to just 200 copies - each numbered and signed by Georg Kajanus and James McCarraher (co-authors). The CD single (see below) is also limited 200 copies worldwide, making it an extremely rare and collectable package. It is therefore anticipated that it may sell out before its release date.

All pre-ordered copies of the book will be accompanied by a free CD single release of Georg Kajanus' previously unreleased "Norwegian Trilogy" including the songs:

  • Dører I Fjellene (Doors In The Mountains) - Listen
  • Bakke Gård - Listen
  • Måken Er Hvit (The Seagull Is White) - Listen
Norwegian version of the unreleased 1995 SAILOR song "Seagulls Are White"!

This will be Georg's first solo single release for thirty-five years.

Once the run is sold out, the book will receive a general paperback release, but without the CD, numbering, signatures etc.

Pre-order your copy of the Kajanus biography now through the website of author James McCarraher - www.mccarraher.co.uk.

07 February 2006:

Some photos of "on the rocks" - live at the Feldberg on 04 February 2006. RESPECT for the boys doing the "Full Monty" at an open air stage in February!! ;-)

SAILOR at the Feldberg - 04 February 2006

Would you like to hear more about Grant's day at the Feldberg concert? Here's a very special exclusive and all explaining concert review of the show by Grant Serpell: SPECIAL THANKS!!

On the Piste again...
By Grant Serpell

"The thought of an open air concert near the top of a mountain appeared rather daunting as I had just returned from 33 degrees Celsius in Cuba.
However, we matelots always relish a new challenge so we duly arrived at London Heathrow Terminal 1 to board our flight to Basel. On arrival we were told that the British Airways flights to Basel go from Terminal 4.
Grant Serpell - Dresden 14.05.2005
Panic.
Mad dash to train with loads of baggage.
Check in --- All is well.
Uneventful journey apart from magnificent scenery of the Schwarzwald.
Brilliant small hotel --- wonderful food and service.
Sound check scheduled for 8 am on Saturday.
Stage is positioned at the foot of the ski runs at Feldberg.
As we have a little time Henry does a quick Downhill, Phil and Grant do a Giant Slalom and Pete manages to sqeeze in 2 ski jumps and a session of freestyle snowboarding.
Not true.
We wait on the stage -- Temp minus 6 Celsius with the only source of warmth being two jets of hot air coming up through two vents at the front of the stage.
We wait.
We continue waiting and eventually we try to do a sound check.
It lasts about a minute. Pete's hands are frozen so we give up and go back to the hotel for a late breakfast.
Lunch had been ordered for 1 pm so when it arrives we just look at it and try to force it down as it's only 2 hours since a large breakfast.
Go to venue at about 3, stay in warm dressing box, container, shed, room, store, cupboard whatever and go on stage at 4.
Cold ---- B cold --- I play most of the set wearing my leather jacket - first time ever. I even wear a scarf for the first four numbers.
Full Monty is unbelieveably cold.
Encouraging reception from a crowd whose average age is 20ish.
After show we visit the VIP bar which is in the open air. We sample Ramazotti, a drink made from fermented BMW sump oil, cough mixture, old socks and sheep droppings.
Flame thrower arrives to thaw us out and we return to hotel for more recreational eating and drinking.
Drunken discussions lead to the perennial topic of the weight and impracticality of the Nickelodeon.
Ideas flow like the Rhein in flood ----- so look out.
Drink and talk till late.
Go to bed.
I watch a boxing match on tele between a German and a South African. German wins easily even though judges say score is about 117 to 112. Silly sport.
Sunday am drive to Basle (note the French spelling now).
Go home.
Sleep ---- Still jet lagged after Cuba.
Grant Serpell"

07 January 2006:

Henry Marsh about the concert at The Bedford in London - 04 December 2005:

"I'm sure those of you that were there, will agree that it was a rather remarkable evening. The venue itself has been a firm favourite if mine ever since the Bo Bruce concerts. The room itself has an atmosphere that seems tailor made for the SAILOR vibe and the audience that night made it one of my favourite evenings of all time.
The fact that family and friends were there was terrific, but also the emergence of so many of you who have been SAILOR supporters for all these years that I have never met. Linda great to meet you at last, Eddie & Mark great to see you again. Those mad guys from Bootle; a special acknowledgement to our ever faithful German fans who are wonderful, and what about Tony Auth who changed his business plans and came all the way from Canada to see SAILOR for the first time. There were many more whom we all spoke with after the gig and I hope that in the likely event of us repeating the Bedford Christmas show this year, you will all come again."

If you want to see the whole of Henry's latest newsletter and read what he thought about his return to SAILOR and his first concerts back in Austria, Germany, Holland and England, check out www.henrymarsh.co.uk!
