In Concert
London - 04 December 2005

SAILOR - London (UK) 04.12.2005

It was a fantastic SAILOR's night on the town in London last Sunday. SAILOR's exclusive concert at The Bedford in London, UK, on 04 December 2005 supplied their enthusiastic fans from England, Sweden, Denmark, Germany etc. with a great show including many of SAILOR's biggest hits as well as a some enjoyable surprises like "Open Up The Door" (a first - especially for Peter Lincoln who did a marvellous job!), "Josephine Baker" with Henry Marsh on the lead vocals (wow!), "Nickelodeon Nights", "Traffic Jam" (for the first time since the 70s in the original album version!) and also a very special version of "Karma Chameleon" with Judd Lander (from original Culture Club recording) on harmonica.
The concert left the fans hoping for the SAILOR ship to return soon to bring us all more of that - and maybe also let us all share the long lost buried treasure!

Newsletter - "Buried Treasure" update...
from Phil Pickett - 14 September 2005

Here's the latest newsletter from Phil Pickett with an update on the "Buried Treasure" project (see Guestbook entry on 14 September 2005):
Best wishes and SAILOR-greetings,

~ Katrin
your webmaster

Phil Pickett 2005" Hi everyone, Phil here!
Reading some of your letters & comments, am so glad the news of Henry's welcome return has provided everyone with such joy & relief after what I am sure must have been an unsettling period. (There's a really great pic of our recent reunion here (see below) and at Henry's website -
www.henrymarsh.co.uk - and will no doubt clearly see from the look on everyone's face how we all feel about it!)
Please rest assured that although the ship appears to 'list' from time to time it is in very good hands and has some pretty tenacious souls on board! (- that's absolutely the last tedious nautical metaphor, promise!)
No, we're just not going to let that 'Old Nickelodeon' stop playing - at least, not whilst it's such fun to play on stage and brings so much entertainment and joy to everyone.
Now then - as am totally responsible, feel I must at least offer a few words on the "Buried Treasure" scenario, which many of you could be forgiven in feeling that the map marking the "X" spot might have been lost forever!
This has been my own project within the band and frustrating delays have occurred, mainly due to, (a) the escalating costs of what will be a fantastically comprehensive & delightful package (to date crippling and borne by yours truly) (b) locating some extra & truly wonderful recordings at the last minute and 'clearing' them for inclusion (this can take months and don't recommend it if you want to keep your hair on - lost most of mine!) (c) As a result of Henry's welcome return, felt it appropriate to reflect this in the packaging art work and 'SAILOR Story' which has now added a few further delays.
BUT - it is almost 'ready to go' now - 38 tracks of pure SAILOR Magic, unreleased gems, classic 'Golden' hits as well as brand new recordings and am hoping everything will be ready in time for our own shows at The Bedford in London in December.
Thanks again for all your understanding and support and can't wait to see everyone in December.
Love and best wishes
Phil Pickett

Sailor - The Musical Journey
03 July until 08 July 2006 at the Carnegie Hall Dunfermline (near Edinburgh), UK
www.dreammakerproductionsfife.com

The poster promoting the musical - CLICK TO ENLARGE!Here are the latest news about a very interesting new project that takes place at the at the Carnegie Hall Dunfermline (near Edinburgh), UK from 03 July until 08 July 2006:

We have got the following information from Bill Blenman, who is the producer for "Dream Maker Productions", and the author of a new musical play called "SAILOR, The Musical Journey":
This musical has taken over three years to write and has been read and enhance by Georg Kajanus, who has also given two unrecorded tracks to the musical that he originally wrote for his very own SAILOR musical in the 70s.
The musical contains 21 songs mainly from the first four albums, "Sailor", "Trouble", "The Third Step", and "Checkpoint", as well as two previously unreleased songs written by Georg Kajanus, exclusively audiable in this musical.
Dream Maker Productions is a charitable company, where all proceeds that are remaining after production expenses have been paid, gets distributed to named charitable organisations. The company does not make any profit from this show.
The production is in aid of two very good causes close to Bill Blenman’s heart; The National Kidney Research Fund and MacMillan Cancer Relief.
Tickets are not available yet, but details will appear here as soon as we get them!

Story Synopsis of "SAILOR - The Musical Journey":

The story is essentially a romance. We meet Robert Leon, a former sailor living near the docks of a French fishing port. Now a lonely inebriate, he spends his life reflecting on the adventures of his past and dwelling on the hopelessness of the present. The chance meeting with a young orphan boy who befriends Robert is the vehicle which allows Robert’s story to unfold. We travel back with Robert to the colourful world of his travelling Matelot days and meet Josephine, the love of his life at a brothel in Copenhagen. We learn of the destruction of the relationship when Josephine travels to East Germany and becomes trapped behind the Iron Curtain and Robert’s vain attempts to rescue her and ultimately Robert’s descent into the oblivion of shore life and alcohol. Life however still has a few surprises for Robert and it is just possible that happiness will not elude him forever……

Set List of "SAILOR - The Musical Journey":

The rights for 'Sailor The Musical Journey' by Bill Blenman are not available for future performance.

News August 2005: Welcome aboard again...
Henry Marsh is back!

He left the ship nearly 6 years ago and continued his voyage alone, to exciting new harbours and all the way to the other side of the ocean - but now he has returned to the SAILOR ship.
SAILOR - Henry, Grant, Phil and Peter
Please welcome him back aboard: the one and only... Henry Marsh!!!

Here's the official announcement from the SAILOR headquater:

"SAILOR are absolutely thrilled to announce officially that after a period of uncertainty since Rob Alderton's recent departure, original member Henry Marsh has now agreed to rejoin the band he helped to co-found in 1973 and will be appearing along with Grant Serpell, Peter Lincoln and Phil Pickett on all future shows including SAILOR's forthcoming concert in Graz, Austria, on 10 September 2005.
This is momentous news which will both surprise and delight all of SAILOR's loyal fans all over the globe and the best possible commemoration of their 30th anniversary year since "A Glass Of Champagne" hit the charts at number 1 in 1975.
To celebrate Henry's timely return to the fold, the group are planning an extra special live concert at the "Bedford Theatre", Balham SW London on 04 December 2005 (with a "hold" on a possible further show on 05 December). This famous 'theatre in the round' is an exciting and intimate venue perfect for that "Welcome back Henry"-moment which without doubt promises to be an unforgettable evening of genuine SAILOR magic Christmas fun and frivolity.
Tickets for this special event will be available from

live in Magdeburg and on German TV - 02 & 03 July 2005

You can now see some new photos of SAILOR live in Magdeburg (Germany) at the Sachsen-Anhalt-Tag on 02 July 2005 at the Concert photos-section. Actually, this wasn't a real "live" show, as the music was playback (SAILOR used the songs from the "Live In Berlin" album), but Rob, Phil, Peter and Grant performed a short but very entertaining playback set including their greatest hits.

The big finale of the Sachsen-Anhalt-Tag was the TV show "Magdeburg Für Anhalter" on German MDR television on 03 July 2005, where SAILOR played "A Glass Of Champagne" and "Girls Girls Girls". Some screenshots of the TV appearance have also been added to the Concert photos-section.

Book: The Georg Kajanus Biography

This is what James McCarraher, author of "A Glass Of Champagne - The Official SAILOR Story" says about his new project, the biography of the original SAILOR captain Georg Kajanus:Georg Kajanus - TV 1991

"The work on 'Kajanus' is now well under way and an early 2006 release is looking very likely indeed.
Like its predecessor, the book will be a strictly limited run (most of the copies of
"A Glass Of Champagne - The Official SAILOR Story" have long since been sold) and, subject to discussions with Georg, the first pre-ordered copies are anticipated to be signed by Georg and I and numbered. There is also the possibility of a CD single release with the project, but this remains at a very early stage.
As in the previous case, orders will be taken a few months in advance. If you would like to be kept up to date with progress on the book and its forthcoming release, please subscribe to the 'Kajanus' mailing list and I will ensure that updates are sent out at regular intervals together with details of how to secure your signed and numbered copy.

Phil Pickett presents his latest project:
"My World" by Inigo Byrne

22 March 2005:

I am very proud to exclusively present my latest recording project to the SAILOR club website and all our fans - young ex-Chester Cathedral chorister Inigo Byrne (www.inigobyrne.co.uk), who is I believe a very special young singer with a big future.
The album is called "My World" and represents a huge amount of work in the studio late last year with many of my musical friends like Peter Lincoln and SAILOR, Fairport Convention (they're all listed!) - helping me to complete the project. I'm also posting a press release (see below) that tells you about how we put the whole thing together.
The single is "Listen To The Voices" - a song I wrote with Labi Siffre a few years ago, and we're shooting the video with Moby's director, Mark Rainsford, next week.
It was very inspiring project to do, a huge amount of fun and sincerely hope you all like it!
Give me some feedback please!
Love and best wishes
Phil xx

End of the UK Tour

The "Glitz Blitz and 70's Hitz" UK Tour with
- SAILOR
- Andy Scott's The Sweet
- The Rubettes featuring Alan Williams
has ended today.

Although the bands were disappointed not to be performing on the later dates of the tour, as the last third had to be cancelled, they were having a great time and made many new friends and fans all over the place.

The reactions we have read in the fan-reviews and on other websites said:

  • "The gig started promptly with the most interesting of acts, SAILOR."
  • "SAILOR were very entertaining (loved the musical salad bar)."
  • "Shame they were not on all night long."
  • "You just HAVE to get up and dance when SAILOR come on stage!"
  • "I even enjoyed SAILOR, very good musicians who undoubtly could move up one gear if they were asked to. They made me laugh."
  • "...It left us wanting more, my maracas are still warm!"
  • "One die hard Sweet fan told me that he had been 'worried' about seeing SAILOR but having seen their set 'thought they were great'."
  • "...You haven't seen anything until you've seen their encore (...), thankfully they kept their clothes on!"
  • "This was a fast paced, lively set played to a receptive crowd."
  • "They sound like a good laugh. I love SAILOR!"
  • "SAILOR were very entertaining and talented and we had a great night!!"
  • "SAILOR gave what is possibly the tackiest performance ever - they had this weird contraption looking like a hotdog stand featuring two keyboards joined together back to back in a sort of boat shape complete with bells, flags and other tacky accessories."
  • "The show was as slick and polished as ever"
  • "I thought that The Sweet and The Rubettes were great but SAILOR really stood out in my opinion, I thought that they were fantastic. (...) It was the first time I've seen Sailor live and now I want MORE MORE MORE!!"
  • "Fantastic! Fantastic! Fantastic! (...) It was a great night full of fun."

to give just a few examples.

Special thanks for all the great photos, reviews and everything from us to
Malcolm & Eileen Knowles, Linda Welch, Sarah Kendall, Mandy Phelps, Alan Wale, Eddy & Jackie Crouch, James McCarraher, Chris Carter, Elaine Blatt, Pat and Clo from France
and to SAILOR, The Rubettes featuring Alan Williams and Andy Scott's The Sweet!

Newsletter from the UK tour...

I have just received the following message from Phil Pickett, so I thought I'd just share it with all of you:
SAILOR live 2004Best wishes and SAILOR-greetings,
~ Katrin
your webmaster

Dear Katrin,
In spite of the cancellations at the end of the tour, I wonder if you would mind giving a message to all of our fans in England to say that although we are disappointed not to be performing on these later dates after all, we are having such a great time making loads of new friends and fans all over the place.. and most importantly, are putting our hearts and souls into the remaining Glitz Blitz and 70s Hitz tour - as we know for sure are The Sweet and The Rubettes.
The word going down about SAILOR however is that we are like a breath of fresh air on the tour, and are making a lot of people sit up and take notice.
So, if any of you can come along - please do your best as the whole evening is fabulous entertainment on many levels and a fantastic night out. The audiences that are coming (and February / March has been frigging cold!) are simply having a ball!
Finally, as so many have requested every night of the tour all over the UK - we are planning to promote our own SAILOR Spectacular - An unadulterated full-on SAILOR Evening of fun, frivolity and back-catalogue for all the UK fans this Autumn at a very special and intimate theatre to be announced soon!!!
"Buried Treasure" launch minus 20 days and counting!
SAILOR Love and Best Wishes (from somewhere on the hard-shoulder of the M11 motorway!)

Some members of the three bands who take part in the Glitz Blitz and 70s Hitz UK tour
- SAILOR

- The Sweet (Andy Scott Sweet)
have recorded a special CD:
It is medley of 6 of the bands biggest hits: I Can Do It / Hellraiser / A Glass Of Champagne / Juke Box Jive / Traffic Jam / Ballroom Blitz.
The idea is raise as much money as possible for the Food For Life charity 100% of which is currently feeding thousands of people every day following the recent Tsunami. Specifically, 85 orphaned children are being fed as a direct result of each CD sold.
On the first 3 gigs of the UK tour the CD sold out.
As many fans of the bands who live abroad won't be able to make it to the shows, Mark Hayley from The Rubettes will be selling some copies on eBay.
The first one will be signed by everyone participating in the recording. Starting price is £9.99 and will go to the highest bidder. The rest will be sold at the fixed price of £9.99, according to Mark.
The single will be available from Sunday morning on eBay. Here's the link: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk...ViewItem&item=4705548006

Update 22 January 2005:

The Nickelodeons...

During the last years there were two Nickelodeons that were being used by SAILOR for their shows - the black plastic-version created in 1996 (left on the picture) and the blue version created in 2001 (right on the picture).
Now there is also a new third version, designed by Rob Alderton, as Phil Pickett explained in his Holland Tour Diary (see below): "Rob has been designing a wonderful new "frock" for the keyboards on certain shows where the "Nick" might be too cumbersome, or expensive for certain promoters. It's beautifully elaborate and intricate in design and we're sure, if asked nicely he might eventually post it on Marinero some time in the future."
At its first concerts in Rostock and Reutlingen (Germany) in December 2004 the new Nickelodeon ("Nickerbox" ;-)) was only half finished, as you can see on the photo below (middle - with thanks to Susanne S.!). But in the meantime the design is complete and ready for the upcoming shows, like its Nickelodeon-brothers...

07 January 2005:

Phil and Grant about "Buried Treasure"...
during their interview at Radio 2 in Holland on 20 November 2004

On 20 November 2004 SAILOR were at the show "Muziekcafé" at Radio 2 in Holland, where Phil and Grant also answered some questions about the upcoming Buried Treasure" anthology CD boxed set:Phil and Grant live 2004

...Because of your 30th anniversary there is also the release of a new album, "Buried Treasure"...
Phil: Yes, it's kind of an anthology of 30 years worth of hits, various recordings, some experimental tracks, a couple of recordings that we've done - greatest hits anthology.
What about the new recordings? How many new recordings are there on this album?
Grant: We're working on three at the moment, some of which are quite radical and some of which are quite traditional. (...)
Do you still inspire one another? Who writes the songs?
Phil: We still perform a lot of the songs in our live set that the original lead singer Georg Kajanus wrote all those years ago, but we've added quite a lot of things to the set. We do... what do we do? We do a version of a song called "Karma Chameleon" which I was involved with in the 1980s in Culture Club. So we've done a SAILOR-version of that, which is a sort of much more acoustic version with a Gospel choir and that's going on the "Buried Treasure" record as well...

So you can see, the CD will be coming soon! ;-)
