„Human Jukebox“ wows audience
Pete Lincoln offered an extraordinarily excellent concert at the Alte Turnhalle

He’s singer and frontman of the glamrock legend SWEET: Pete Lincoln. On Saturday he was on stage at the Alte Turnhalle on his own at his intimate concert. Pete Lincoln knows how to wow his listeners only with his voice and his guitar like nobody else. The listeners got a mix of his own songs as well as hits of the last 40 years, interpreted in a very unique style.
(…) And there he stood. Pure Pete, without many technical gadgets, only with his guitar, and took off right away with “Weather With You”, originally by Crowded House. With “All At Sea”, a story about a difficult relationship” he played one of his own songs. But it was no night to lament. Just the opposite. The mood at the Alte Turnhalle was happy and cheerful. Things continued joyfully with “A Glass Of Champagne” by the band SAILOR whose lead singer Lincoln was for ten years – in a time “before Sweet, a long galaxy ago”, he laughed.
Many famous musicians like Eric Burdon from the Animals, Mark Knopfler of the Dire Straits or Sting come from his homwtown Newcastle. This was the perfect transition to a medley in which songs like “Roxane” or “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic” can’t be done without. Lincoln’s inventory of songs seemed to be endless. There is no fixed set-list. Of course he plays songs that can’t be left out at any of his concerts. But the special thing about Pete’s concerts is the fact that he can play almost any song by acclamation. This makes each concert individual and therefore so special.
Once the first song-wish gets played there is no holding back in the audience. In Butzbach this was no difference. Soon the first wish was delivered: “Frozen Man” by James Taylor. Pete gave his all and amazed the audience with terrific interpretations of e.g. Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” or “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”. Of course it’s not always possible to fulfill all wishes. He can’t help with “Rocket Man” or “Pokerface”, but the audience member who had the wish wouldn’t have wanted to sing it on stage himself. His repertoire seems truly endless. May it be “The Boxer” by Paul Simon or “Lola” by The Kinks.
Of course the songs from Sweet can’t be missed. But he’s also got what it takes when it comes to topical songs like “Hey Soul Sister” by Train or “Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran. As a special thank-you for concert organisers Elke and Wolfang Langsdorf he plays “Chasing Cars” by Snow Patrol. With a medley ranging from “Wig Wam Bam” to “Fox On The Run”, “Little Willy”, “Ballroom Blitz” and “Poppa Joe” he gave a little taste of what to expect from the charity concert of Sweet that will take place at the Alte Turnhale on 25 October. Only 120 tickets are left. “Please come back in October” said Lincoln to promote the concert.
With “Love Is Like Oxygen” in an unusually “smooth version” and the Beatles hit “Hey Jude” the singer said goodbye to an amazed Butzbach-audience. “Unbelievable what he can do with his guitar”, said one of the visitors, being really impressed. “An exceptionally gifted singer and musician that one just has to experience live”, said an enthusiastic fan. It was a concert of extraordinary excellence.

Pete Lincoln sings more than just Sweet

So great. Pete Lincoln, singer of the band Sweet and formerly SAILOR has brought approximately 200 listeners an especially good Saturday evening in Butzbach. Pleasant songs, his fantastic voice and his humorous manner – the audience was enthusiastic.
The atmosphere in the Alte Turnhalle was homelike, unlike the usual pop concert halls. Parquet floor, yellow lights that lit the windows and a stage that looked as if a choral society might perform. But instead there was the tall singer, unpretentious, dressed in jeans and shirt. With his guitar he offered songs that warmed the hearts and created a great mood – either because they were so empathetic or because the listeners knew them from their youth days. “The atmosphere is great. I really like how he delivers all this”, said Nevzat Aslan from Butzbach during the break. Thomas Zozmann, also from Butzbach, had gotten the hint from friends. “I find it very entertaining”, he said. Ute Maria Krüger had travelled from Gießen. She said: “It is very good and not the first time that I see Pete. The artist is a funny, intelligent type. He doesn’t just make music but also inspires everyone with his stories that he connects with the songs.”
The songs delivered by Lincoln were partly written by himself, additionally he played songs from other musicians, e.g. “The Frozen Man” by James Taylor. Soon after admitting to be a “romantic fool” after this dreamy title, he brought the cheerful mood back with “Lola” by the Kinks. “You’re all great singers”, he praised the audience that sang along loudly, and asked for music wishes. “Bohemian Rhapsody”, “Love Is Like Oxygen” and “Poppa Joe” – the audience didn’t hesitate. But the artist briefly hesitated. “No, I won’t do ‘Poppa Joe’”. Marvellous. At the end of the concert there was applause that just didn’t seem to end. Wolfgang Langsdorf who had organised the event together with his wife Elke was also impressed. “Fantastic.” (…)
