"Sailor's Night On The Town"

The story behind the painting:
This is the first painting I ever created in the SAILOR series. The reason I call it "Sailor’s Night On The Town" is that the song of the same title was the very first song I wrote for "SAILOR, THE MUSICAL". Most of the songs on the first album and some on the second album were originally written for this musical theater piece, which has never been produced. Grant Serpell had the idea that these songs should be used as a pop music project, rather than in musical, and thus the group, SAILOR, was born.
The mood of the painting was the template for the set for SAILOR’s live performances. The street girl, the cranes of the harbour behind her and what became our ultimate symbol, the street lamp, are the powerful images in this painting that have always intrigued me.
(Just a note in passing: although "Traffic Jam" was written before "Sailor’s Night On The Town", it had nothing to do with the idea for the Musical. I even tried to persuade CBS to leave "Traffic Jam" off the first album, as I didn’t think it fit in with the concept of SAILOR. Obviously, I wasn’t successful!)
