The town, the girls, the Wagners and SAILORs and the old Nickelodeon sound... - A review by Katrin Wagner:

On 31 December 2002 Karsten and I drive to Mainz in order to see SAILOR at the "SWR 1 Silvesterparty" together with the other bands Middle Of The Road (with Sally Carr), Barry Ryan and Band, Dozy Beaky Mick and Tich, The Rattles and Hello. On the way we have some problems because it's a little icy, but we finally reach Mainz at 2 pm.
We check in at the hotel and wait for our SAILORs. First we meet Rob, then Phil, Grant and his wife Michelle. Our friend Christel arrives a little later too, she also had problems because her motorway was closed down completely after an accident. We go to the concert hall which is right next to the hotel, get our usual places in the first row of the audience and wait for the beginning of
Michael, Marina, Katrin and Karstenthe show. Karsten's radio-colleague Andreas and his friend Michael join us there, as well as our old SAILOR-friends Marina and Michael whom we hadn't seen for a long time.
The Oldie Night starts at 8 pm, and the first band is Middle Of The Road (with Sally Carr) - very nice as usual. Then we see Barry Ryan who performs together with a German band from Gifhorn named The Hound Dogs. Afterwards it's time for Dozy Beaky Mick and Tich who do a really good show.
At 11.15 pm it's time for SAILOR. They are the main act, although two more bands are to play after them, because the guys from SWR 1 radio wants them to do "A Glass Of Champagne" for a second time right after midnight. Things turn out to be a bit chaotic because SAILOR have to leave one or two songs out in order to finish their main performance just before midnight. People keep on holding up signs in order to tell them what time it is etc... But SAILOR are great as usual, and Peter gives us a special surprise by changing the lyrics of "The Old Nickelodeon Sound" a little bit to: "The town, the girls, the Wagners and SAILORs and the old Nickelodeon sound"!!
The "full monty" is finished at 11.55 pm, and then there's a short break during which the host tries to talk to the audience. That doesn't work that well because everyone's now waiting for the new year... Right after midnight SAILOR get back on stage again and perform "A Glass Of Champagne" once again, a rather chaotic version during which they are joined by all the other artists.
After SAILOR, most of the audience goes into the foyer of he hall to drink one or two glasses of champagne... We go back to the hotel and discover Rob and his girlfriend Anna there. Everyone is ready to party, but the hotel-bar is reserved for a very noisy private celebration and there's no chance to sit down and have a drink or talk there. So we decide to look for the other SAILORs, and after a while we find them in the foyer of the concert hall. There we talk to all the SAILORs for a while and also meet the other SAILOR-family-members, Phil's wife, Peter's wife, Phil's son Harry, Grant's son Edmund etc...
At 2 am SAILOR go to bed and we decide to do the same. Christel and I get back to our room(s), while Karsten enjoys the end of the Oldie Night and the performance of "Hello" before we all go to bed.
The next morning Karsten, Christel and I have breakfast at the strange but very expensive hotel. Then we talk to the SAILORs, take some photos in front of the Christmas tree and they sign some Kassel-concert-posters for us. At 1 pm it's time to say goodbye to all SAILORs and SAILOR-family-members, and we also leave the town a little later. On the motorway we overtake SAILOR's driver Thomas who has just brought them to the Frankfurt airport and is now driving the van back to Berlin... ;-)

A concert review by Karsten Wagner:

Katrin and I drove to Mainz on the 31 December 2002 to see the bands SAILOR, Middle Of The Road (with Sally Carr), Barry Ryan and Band (The Hound Dogs), Dozy Beaky Mick and Tich, The Rattles and Hello live. The Motorway was a little bit icy, so Katrin had to drive carefully. After 2 1/2 hours, we were there.
After checking in at the hotel at 2 pm, we waited for the SAILOR-boys. They where in the Hotel since the day before. After a short
Karsten, Katrin and Andreastime we met Grant and his wife Michelle, Phil and Rob. Our friend Christel was on the way too, she also had problems because her motorway was closed...
One problem on that day was: The big hotel-bar was reserved for a private party. So, there was no chance for SAILOR and us to sit and have drink after the show there.
After several in+out-walks in/beside the concert-hall we met Christel after she finally arrived. My radio-friend Andreas and his friend Michael joined us a little later. And old friends are there as well: Marina and Michael. The hall officially opened at 7.15 pm and we got to "our" places in front of the stage.
Middle Of The Road with Sally Carr were first, then we saw Barry Ryan and Band who played a lot of covers, and afterwards Dozy Beaky Mick and Tich aswell, but they were very good live that night. After that, at 11.15 pm, SAILOR went on stage. When Sailor performed "The Old Nickelodeon Sound" Pete sung: "...the town, the girls, the Wagners and SAILORs..." :-) They were the main act and had to play into the new year... that was the plan... it was all chaotic because before Midnight, SAILOR had to leave the stage, no one came for a while, the audience was waiting... for what??? Can't tell ya... The guy from the Südwestfunk radio came and tried to say something about the new year (didn't really work) - then he gave me the microphone and I had to tell the people my new years-message (oops): "Peace, Love and many SAILOR-concerts for 2003.." (that's what I remember...) ;-) .
Then SAILOR came back to play "A Glass Of Champagne" again, a chaotic version, with "the right words on the wrong place" :-o .
Then all the people went in foyer of he hall to buy champagne.... We went back to the hotel and we found Rob and Anna. Everybody liked to party, but there was no chance because of the private hotel party. So the other SAILORs were lost in the big hotel/hall and we had to search a little... Half an hour later we found some of the guys in the foyer of the concert hall, where they were drinking and eating ice with their families... :-o
The rest of the evening was a "lost-and-found-game", and around 2 o'clock SAILOR were gone and we went to our room, with Christel. I went back into the hall, to party with Andreas, Michael... dancing to the sound of 'Hello'. :-) Was real fun! After them (they were the last band) we all went to bed.
The next morning SAILOR signed three Kassel-Concert-Posters for us, then we talked for a while, took some photos and then it was time for goodbye...
We went back home to Kassel, I was so tired, Katrin drove again (Marinero's a very good taxi-driver) ;-)
Greetings Cap K / Karsten ~~~~~~
